Darius Sparks Shares About His Dreamstarter Experience

9/24/15 under Dreamstarter

My name is Darius Sparks, I am 20 years old. I am enrolled with the Standing Rock Sioux tribe. My dream was to run basketballs camps in the city I live in now, Bismarck, North Dakota. I also

wanted to bring some positivity to my hometown reservation in Fort Yates. Making my dream into reality wouldn’t have been possible without the help from Billy Mills and the whole Running Strong organization!

With the Dreamstarter Grant, I was able to run free basketball camps for the youth in both of my communities of Bismarck and Fort Yates. The camps taught the kids how to be better at basketball, how to use Lakota Values in their daily lives, and how to be the best they can be – all while having the most fun possible. The kids also received Spark Change Basketball shirts, basketballs, shoes, and fleece jackets, which were donated by Running Strong. The kids left the camp sweaty but with big smiles, appreciative for the opportunity to work their butts off at a free basketball camp.

Special thanks Running Strong! I don’t know what I would have done going forward with my dream if I hadn’t discovered this grant opportunity. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to change the lives of many youth in my communities.
