The Weights for Wellness project jumpstarted with the new 2015-2016 school year. It has been a busy first month of transforming an old classroom, which was used primarily for storage, into a new wellness area for youth to use during the school day.
With a little elbow grease, paint, and new equipment furnished by the Running Strong for American Indian Youth Dreamstarter grant, this once underutilized space is now a healthy welcoming environment for all!
With the seasons changing, and weather becoming colder outside, the room is seeing an increase in usage from students and teachers throughout the day. The wellness room is also serving dual purpose by providing an active classroom with a new class called Lifetime Fitness, and providing a safe space for students who are in need of physical and occupational therapy.
The Next Step
My next step in the Weights for Wellness project is to conduct three community wellness class sessions. I was able to hold a sit-down interview with a teacher, who is also a Cross Fit certified instructor, to begin working on lesson plans for community wellness classes starting this fall. I will be able to assist the instructor during the community classes, while also gaining experience in the field of fitness.
Be sure to check in later this fall to see the progress of the community wellness classes and usage of the new room. Until next time, Toksta!
