Running Strong Annual Reservations Tour: Looking Back, Looking Forward

5/6/14 under General News Schools & Youth Center

We are so excited to be getting ready for our 25th Annual Running Strong Reservations Tour. This unique tour allows you to see the programs you support first hand. In the past 25 years, the tour has become a tradition where we return to the Cheyenne River and Pine Ridge Indian Reservations to meet with friends and follow the progress of Running Strong projects.

We have just released the 2014 tour brochure, which provides information about the sites we will visit on this year’s tour, and registration is open!

In this anniversary year, we will be placing added emphasis on Running Strong’s history with each of our partners, and on tour history. We’ll be reviving some of our past tour traditions, and hearing about how far Running Strong and our partners have come together.

As we prepare for this year’s tour, it is also nice to remember the great things that have happened during past tours!

Last year tour participants impressed us all as they sprang into action to help school children get the textbooks they needed. During the tour, 6th graders at Takini School – one of our 2014 tour stops! – were in need of 10 more textbooks, as they were sharing copies between 2-3 students and often had to use photocopied pages. Half of the money for the textbooks was raised on the tour itself, with generous donations from our participants, and the other half was raised soon after.

Takini teacher Nette Meade expressed her gratitude. “The students will be so happy to be getting textbooks so they don't have to share and I don't have to run copies of pages,” she said. “This is so wonderful of you to follow through with.  We get a number of groups that go through and make promises to our community and then they go away and we never hear from them again.  This is the first time in the 14 months that I have been here that someone has followed through. Thank you so much!”

Whether it’s your first year joining us on the tour, or you’re a Running Strong tour veteran, the 2014 Running Strong Reservations Tour is sure to offer its own new adventures and insights.
