Pine Ridge Girls School
In the morning, we visited the Pine Ridge Girls School, where Year 4 Dreamstarter Tara Rouillard is installing an Indigenous Science Lab! We got a tour of the school, a beautiful building that was built by our Water Coordinator Ken Lone Elk, and Tara shared more about her project and its impact with us!
We also got to spend an extra morning with Billy Mills, who joined us at the girls’ school!
Oyate Teca Project
We then headed off to visit and enjoy lunch at the Oyate Teca Project garden and youth center. Rose Fraser is the Program Director of Oyate Teca; she has built Oyate Teca into a great community program. Since the start of 2017, the building has received a new furnace, making the long winters much easier, and the backpack food program was implemented which served hundreds of children!
They also have programs that support the youth in the community, including several summer camps to keep the kids active during the summer.
Oyate Teca was also able to hire 2 full-time gardeners to help keep up with their extensive gardening programs. We got a tour of the center and the gardens and were treated to dinner with fresh produce from the gardens. Little Wound School Powwow We had a wonderful time at the powwow, in the evening. We danced, made new friends, and experienced a very beautiful tradition in Lakota culture!
Tomorrow we visit the Lakota Waldorf School and then head off to Rapid City, SD. On the way, we’ll drive through Custer State Park as well as spend some time at The Journey Museum. We’ve also saved the best for last, we’ll have our closing ceremony with Billy Mills.
