Every day, Shay and her Wailaki Language friends, post either the "Word of the Day" or "Phrase of the Day" on their Facebook page, but they also realize that not everyone has access to social media. In addition to posting videos & photos online, Shayleena plans on hosting community events throughout her Dreamstarter year. The goal is to bring people together from the communnity who may not have access to online resources so they could come and learn some basic Wailaki words and phrases as well as allow people following online a chance to practice the language in person!
On August 2nd, Shayleena and her team hosted the first Wailaki Language community event for the 2017 Dreamstarter year. People of all ages attended from the community. Everyone participated in either learning the animals, colors or the four directions in the language. Some also learned how to read the “Brown Bear, Brown Bear" book in Wailaki. Even with the hot weather everyone participated as well as spoke the language throughout the event! With tons of positive feedback Shayleena and her team are excited to host three other language events through her grant year!
