This week, Running Strong staff member Julia has been visiting the Pine Ridge and Cheyenne River Indian Reservations to see the Summer Food Services Program in action, and plan for the 27th Running Strong Reservations Tour.
The Summer Food Services Program runs from June through August, when kids are out of school for the summer. The program gives kids the opportunity to have free lunches when they don’t get free school meals, and to interact in a safe and fun environment on the Cheyenne River Reservation.
Kids in remote villages walk or ride bikes to sites within their communities each day to take part in the program. Often, older kids bring their younger siblings to make sure they have lunch that day.

While visiting the feeding sites Julia, along with field coordinator Dave, pumped up and distributed basketballs to the kids. They loved them!
Dave and Julia also visited sites Running Strong will visit on the Reservations Tour to finalize details before the trip. This year the tour takes place September 11th – 17th. Check back then to virtually follow the tour!
