Organization: Oglala Sioux Tribe Partnership for Housing
Year: 2002-Present
Tribe: Oglala Lakota (Sioux)
Reservation: Pine Ridge Reservation
Location: Pine Ridge, SD

There is a pressing housing shortage on the Pine Ridge Reservation. It is not unusual to find families of ten or more people living in a two or three bedroom house.

The Oglala Sioux Tribe Partnership for Housing (OSTPH) is a tribally chartered non-profit that is dedicated to providing home ownership opportunities on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

OSTPH provides assistance to families on the Reservation in many ways.

Program participants enjoy their new home.
Program participants enjoy their new home.
Some of the services they provide are:
• assistance to families applying for a mortgage
• homebuyer training
• credit counseling
• developing building sites
• building homes for families
• subsidizing the purchase price of homes to maintain affordability.

Since OSTPH was founded in 1999, the Partnership has helped more than 70 families buy homes, many of which were also built by the Partnership. Participating families get to choose their new home’s layout, final location, and receive housing counseling.

Running Strong is in its fifth year of support for the OSTPH.
