"PASSION FOR FASHION" PROM DRESS DRIVE

Two Cheyenne River sisters show their excitement after picking out their prom dresses. Each year, the Cheyenne River Youth Project® holds the Passion for Fashion Prom Dress Drive to benefit Cheyenne River girls that want to attend their prom, but cannot afford new dresses.

All year, CRYP collects gently used special occasion dresses, shoes, purses, and accessories. CRYP then holds a special night for these girls where they receive a makeover and get to "shop" through the donated dresses for their prom outfit.

This prom dress drive ensures that these teenage girls, who are growing up in one of the poorest communities in the US, can forget their worries and enjoy their special night.

Every contribution, no matter how big or small, will help make this year’s prom a magical one for our young women. All teenagers deserve to have this special night. It’s one they’ll remember for the rest of their lives.” This year, the young women arrive at Cokata Wiconi and will enjoy a luncheon and special presentation on health and self-respect.

Then teens will have the opportunity to
select their prom dresses and accessories
receive manicures, pedicures and facials
learn the best makeup applications for prom night
and try new hairstyles.

The culmination of the event will be when the teens model their new looks in a formal runway fashion show, which has always been a huge hit.

“Many of these young women undergo a real transformation during Passion for Fashion, and when they get on that catwalk, they forget their nerves and really start to shine,” said Julie Garreau, CRYP’s executive director. “Seeing our teens, especially the ones who are a bit more shy, demonstrate such self-confidence is an emotional experience for all of us.”

After the fashion show concludes, the teens will enjoy cake, compete in DJ Hero and Guitar Hero tournaments and see if they are winners in the final prize drawings.

“We’re so thankful for all the volunteer support we receive each year for Passion for Fashion,” says Alex Meador, Special Events Coordinator, “It’s not too late to donate.  We still need new and gently used dresses in sizes four to 26 — especially in the larger sizes. We also need jewelry, hair accessories, formal shoes, makeup and bath sets.”

Gift cards and cash donations are also much appreciated; staff and volunteers will take the contributed funds and make additional purchases based on need.
