Running Strong with OSTPH: 15 Years of Providing Safe, Healthy Housing on Pine Ridge

At Running Strong for American Indian Youth® we have long placed a great importance on working to ensure that the residents of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation have a safe place to call home.

For years, we have partnered with the Oglala Sioux Tribe Partnership for Housing (OSTPH) and supported its mission to provide basic home rehabilitation for privately-owned family homes on the reservation which are unsafe, unsanitary, and/or unfit to provide necessary warmth and shelter during the winter months.

On Wednesday, April 4, for one hour beginning at noon Mountain time, 2 p.m. Eastern time, Running Strong field staff Dave Lone Elk and his father, Ken Lone Elk, will be speaking on the state of housing on the reservation on the Pine Ridge radio station, KILI Radio.

Running Strong supporters will be able to listen to the broadcast live here!

The Oglala Lakota people continue to face a severe housing shortage, with an estimated 2,100 new homes needed to house families that are essentially homeless,” reports the OSTPH.

“For those who already own some type of home or shelter, resources to keep those homes safe, sanitary and warm during winter are grossly inadequate,” adds the OSTPH.

Each year, through Running Strong’s grant support for home rehab, not only are funds used directly for the much-needed rehabilitation of houses and mobile homes, but the OSTPH is also enabled to leverage those funds to secure additional resources from federal, private and faith-based partners.

Since 2003, thanks to our loyal and generous supporters, Running Strong has been able to provide grants totally in excess of $370,000.
