Dreamstarter Celeste Syas

“The establishment of my studio is essential for our community, particularly for those who may feel stigmatized or anxious about seeking traditional one-on-one therapy. Our community grapples with significant issues related to addiction and substance use, with many individuals lacking suitable and comfortable avenues for emotional expression, epically during the colder months.”

Celeste Syas

Celeste Syas, 28, is an artist, educator, and community leader from the Shinnecock Indian Nation. After living in Sacramento, CA, Celeste and her family moved to the Shinnecock Reservation when she was 10 years old. Returning to her ancestral homelands gave Celeste a sense of profound connection to her culture and community. Using her love for art and expertise in Family Studies and Social Work, Celeste leads many culturally relevant community programs that are making a positive impact on Shinnecock Youth.

Being a ‘First Contact’ tribe, the Shinnecock Indian Nation has endured centuries of abuse by colonists and the latter government, resulting in intergeneration trauma that presents as emotional, mental, physiological distress and is further perpetuated by stigma and lack of resources for getting help. Celeste seeks to create more opportunities for youth to engage in art therapy, as it promotes healing and positive ways of expression, while removing barriers associated with traditional one-on-one therapy.

Indigi Arts will provide artistic and cultural opportunities for Shinnecock Youth between the ages of 4 and 18. Through a series of art therapy workshops focused on traditional art techniques and pottery methods, the program aims to engage youth in activities that foster self-expression and skill development. These workshops will equip Shinnecock youth with essential life skills and promote positive coping mechanisms to create a brighter future and healthier community.

This initiative is particularly important for uplifting my community. We are a small reservation in a town with abundant resources, yet we often find ourselves overlooked. Numerous native communities endure hardship in silence due to insufficient support from external entities.”
