“These efforts strengthen relationships between elders and youth, rebuild knowledge systems disrupted by colonization, and reinforce a sense of responsibility to future generations. When communities regain control over how food is grown, shared, and understood, the benefits extend beyond nutrition to cultural survival and self-determination. ”
Steven Wilson (Oglala Lakota), 22, is a community leader dedicated to restoring Lakota food sovereignty and strengthening connections between youth, culture, and land on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Raised within a community rich in cultural knowledge and tradition, Steven has witnessed both the resilience of his people and the challenges they face. Guided by Lakota values and Traditional Ecological Knowledge, he is committed to creating opportunities for youth to reconnect with ancestral teachings, land-based practices, and the responsibilities that come with them.
On the Pine Ridge Reservation, food insecurity is rooted in systemic challenges, including generations of land dispossession, economic barriers, and the disruption of traditional food systems. Many families face limited access to fresh, affordable food, while highly processed, imported foods have become the most accessible option. This disconnect from traditional foodways has contributed to serious health disparities and a loss of cultural knowledge. Steven’s Dreamstarter project, “Pine Ridge Community Garden,” addresses these challenges by restoring relationships to land, food, and culture through a community-led, youth-centered approach.
Through the development of a community garden on tribally designated land, Steven will create a space for hands-on learning grounded in Lakota teachings. Youth will engage in cultivating, harvesting, and preserving culturally and spiritually significant plants, guided by elders and community leaders who will share knowledge of planting protocols, stewardship, and ceremony. The garden will increase access to fresh, culturally relevant foods while fostering intergenerational knowledge transfer and community connection. By centering food as a sacred and relational practice, Steven’s project supports long-term goals of improved health, strengthened cultural identity, and greater self-determination for the Pine Ridge community.
