Excitement and Gratitude from Families
In October and November, Running Strong for American Indian Youth® partnered with Brushy Cherokee Action Group in Sallisaw, Oklahoma, to distribute 1,000 food boxes to families in need. The organization serves four tribal nations and six communities, ensuring essential food reaches struggling families.
Each 25-pound box contained a variety of frozen chicken (patties, chunks, and nuggets) along with non-perishable food items, including:
- Proteins: Beef stew, chili, tuna, black beans
- Grains: Brown rice
- Canned goods: Vegetables, fruits
- Snacks: Applesauce, dried fruit
Children’s Joy and Community Impact
“The families were very excited to see the pre-boxed food,” shared Brushy treasurer Robin Hickman.
“The volunteer told the children there were chicken nuggets in the boxes, and they were so excited—they took pictures with the food boxes.”
Overcoming Food Insecurity
Robin highlighted the Brushy community’s struggles with poverty. Many families lack the resources to buy enough food and do not have transportation to reach the nearest grocery store, which is seven miles away and offers limited food options.
She recalled a grandfather’s story from the November distribution:
“The man said he had run out of money and eaten the last food items in his kitchen cabinet. He was stressed and hungry and did not know what he would do for the rest of the month.”
After receiving his food box, he felt relief:
“He could not believe all the food he was given—it would be enough to feed himself and his grandchildren.”
The Need for Continued Support
Families in Brushy expressed how hard it has become to feed their families. Many shared that without the help of Brushy Cherokee Action Group and Running Strong, they don’t know what they would do.
“Many of the children wanted to take pictures with the boxes. It was heartwarming to see their smiles and the relief on their parents’ and grandparents’ faces, knowing they wouldn’t have to struggle to feed their families,” Robin shared.
