For over 30 years, Running Strong has been dedicated to providing clean water to families on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. We began by delivering water by truckloads and progressed to digging deep water wells. Despite these efforts, many families still rely on outhouses and hauling water. Even today, dozens live without running water.
Launching the Mni Wiconi (Water is Life) Program
In 2015, we launched the Mni Wiconi (Water is Life) water line connection program. This initiative connects households to the Oglala Sioux Rural Water Supply System main service line, which spans the vast reservation. Since then, we’ve connected 309 families, providing them with treated water for drinking, cooking, bathing, and washing—whether through an outdoor hydrant or indoor plumbing with a septic system.
Transforming Lives Through Clean Water
Paul K. endured over a year without access to water, relying on a relative’s house three miles away. We connected Paul to the main water line, restoring the convenience and dignity of running water in his home.
We also assisted Michelle L., who had been without water for two months, and Shirley M., an elder residing with five children aged 3 to 16. These connections have significantly improved their quality of life.
Urgent Need Before Winter Arrives
With colder weather approaching on the Great Plains of South Dakota, time is running out to complete water projects before the ground freezes. Frozen ground makes it impossible to dig trenches and lay pipelines. Among the three critical projects we hope to complete this fall is for Chelsea Z., who has three children under 12. Her house has indoor plumbing but no running water. When asked why she needs a water line hook-up, she responded:
“Need water to cook, clean, bathrooms, etc.”
The Cost of Providing Essential Water Access
Each water hook-up costs nearly $20,000, ensuring a family has access to clear, running water. This is an investment in health, dignity, and the future of these families.
Our Unwavering Commitment
We are dedicated to:
- Continuing to connect more families to clean water.
- Ensuring the well-being and dignity of Native families on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
- Upholding water as a fundamental human right.
