No family should face a food crisis. That’s why Running Strong for American Indian Youth® is working tirelessly to combat food insecurity on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.
Running Strong for American Indian Youth® Initiative
We are acquiring a 40’ x 8’ modular container, which will be installed with shelving and refrigeration on the grounds of the Oyate Ta Kola Ku (OTKK) Community Center. This 320 sq. ft. unit will be transformed into a food pantry, providing the Pine Ridge community with access to food when they need it, rather than relying on a monthly food box.
Transforming a Container into a Community Food Pantry
The food pantry will offer a variety of food items, including:
- Frozen meats
- Canned products
- Rice and pasta
- Breakfast items
- Fresh produce from the nearby Medicine Root Garden
Beyond Food: Additional Essential Supplies
Recognizing that families often need more than just food, the pantry will also supply:
- Feminine hygiene products
- Dental care products
Making Food Accessible and Affordable
To ensure accessibility, the pantry will:
- Provide items at low cost
- Accept SNAP payments
- Offer food items at no cost for families that qualify
The Ongoing Food Security Challenges at Pine Ridge
The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation continues to face significant challenges regarding food security. According to The Washington Post, half the residents live below the federal poverty line, and unemployment hovers around 80 percent.
Centrally Located at the Oyate Ta Kola Ku Community Center
While there are other food pantries on the reservation, the OTKK center is centrally located in the small community of Kyle, making it accessible to many in need.
Our Goal: Opening Before the Harsh Winter
Our goal is to have the container equipped and operational before the new year. This timing is crucial to serve hungry families during the harshest days on the reservation, located on the Great Plains of South Dakota.
