Running Strong for American Indian Youth® Dreamstarter™ Shayleena Britton (Round Valley Indian Tribes) put on the first of four quarterly events Shay plans on hosting in the community with the goal of preserving her tribal Wailaki language.
She is currently teaching the language to the greater Wailaki community through the use of social media, including sharing information on a Facebook page which will include a word of the day, traditional stories, prayers and language for everyday purposes.
“Our website will provide organization of language topics and immediate access to audio recordings,” she said.
At the most recent event there were games and activities that taught people how to say numbers and simple phrases. This included a rock game, a spin-the-wheel game, and water balloons to keep the kids engaged. In addition, people made flowers that taught them how to say colors in Wailaki.
