Update: Providing healthy snacks to Native Youth

6/9/15 in Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation, South Dakota under Schools & Youth Center Basic Needs Food

Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation, South Dakota

Running Strong helps the Cheyenne River Youth Project (CRYP) provide healthy food for kids at their teen center.

Five times per week, CRYP puts snacks out in the teen center, which usually include a daily fruit and vegetable, as well as another healthy option like nuts or whole grain chips.

The grant from Running Strong also helps provide food for a small meal during the week days, like meat or veggie rolls.

We recently got feedback from CRYP about these snacks.

CRYP Executive Director Julie Garreau said “When the kids do come to get a quick snack, they come sit along with staff and visit about their games, how their day went, and just a quick catch-up on themselves.”

Julie also provided feedback from the kids:

  • 15 yr old boy "…you guys always have the best snacks...!"
  • 15 yr old girl "…your guys' veggie roll up thingys are awesome"
  • 13 yr old girl "[The teen center is the] only place with healthy snacks"
