Takini Smart Sacks Covid

At Takini, Children Eat Smart

At the Takini School on the Cheyenne River Sioux Indian Reservation, students are guaranteed to receive a breakfast and lunch on school days, and a Running Strong Smart Sack full of groceries every Friday afternoon to take home and share with their family to tide them over the weekend.

But now that Takini is closed due to the coronavirus health precautions, Running Strong was determined to make sure these children still received their regular meals.

However, thanks to the supporters of Running Strong for American Indian Youth and the creativity and dedication of our Takini School distribution partner, Mary Little Sky, food boxes are being delivered door-to-door to students in school SUVs.

Mary has rallied the school maintenance staff, bus drivers and administrators to pack the Smart Sacks with nonperishable food items including pasta, beans, juice, canned peaches, applesauce, shelf stable milk, and more.

And because we buy the food items from a wholesaler, the total cost is just $5.69 per bag.

Our goal is to provide 150 Takini students and their families with food bags for the next four weeks.

For just $22.69 you can help us provide food bags to a family for a solid month.

Life is hard for these families in rural locations, and in the midst of this uncertain time in our nation’s history, children should not have to worry where their next meal is coming from.

You can make a big difference by giving what you can today!
